Open discussion on RDMAmojo future
Hi all.
In the last few years - I wrote and maintained this blog.
I supported hundreds of RDMA developers in the blog (and using emails)
and I spent hundreds of hour in it.
I had many changes in my life, so I failed to find time to add more new posts;
however, I tried to answer from time to time to questions.
I now have more time, and I want to increase this blog and improve it.
I would like to get money from this blog,
so I'll be able to pay people to improve this site, move it to a faster web-hosting,
and improve the blog in general.
I published all the content free of charge, and on a daily basis,
tens/hundreds of people enter this blog and find it useful.
And until now, I didn't add any ad to this blog.
The "Paypal donation" button just didn't cover the expenses of the blog
and no one sponsored it.
I want to discuss with you guys what to do.
The solution can be one (or more) of the following options, and if you have any idea
or you want to tell me what is you opinion - it will be great!
I'm not a Mellanox technologies employee anymore, so I have more freedom now on how to raise money for this blog.
Here are the options (unsorted):
1) Add Google Ads to this blog
2) Add Ads to RDMA HW/SW products (if you are such a vendor, you can contact me...)
3) Sell premium content, i.e. provide user + password to see new content (all current content will always be available)
4) Add sponsored content (write posts, when someone will pay for them and its name will be written in the post forever)
5) Develop RDMA related SW and sell it via this blog
6) Write ebooks and sell them via this blog
7) Join affiliation program of Amazon
No matter what I will choose, the blog will be here in the next few years,
and *if* I'll close it - I'll give a few months notice and provide an easy mean
to download all the content.
Hope to hear your ideas/opinions.
Thanks
Dotan

Tell us what do you think.
Maybe try out Patreon? PayPal has an extremely bad reputation for being dodgy, which is probably why that's not getting much use.
Patreon makes for somewhat stable donations. This blog is a bit specialised though... not sure... :)
Hi.
This is a good idea;
This blog is about RDMA programming, since there is a vacuum in this field;
I can always add more content (general programming, tools, tips etc.) - but the internet is full of this information...
I would support the option to Sell premium content, i.e. provide user + password to see new content (all current content will always be available)
Thanks for sharing your opinion
:)

RDMA isn't always my job, but I do feel that paying for this offline consulting is fair. I'll poke the PayPal, at least you can get a coffee (but maybe not at *bucks).
Thanks
:)
Im vote for patreon page and 1,5 and 6 from you list.
Hi.
Thanks for sharing your opinion with me

6) sounds a great idea, I would definitely buy one if you wrote it.
Thanks for your feedback

My company will be willing to pay you for some advice / consulting which I guess can help you with maintaining this great site.
This will be great
:)
I'm not a freelancer though, and don't have plans to be a full time RDMA consular;
however advising/consulting from time to time seems like a great idea.
Thanks

Suggest posting message to openfabrics mailing list (ie. beat the bushes).
#6 also good idea
#4 could include "product reviews", including popular software projects eg) dpdk
Hi.
Thanks for your feedback.
I'm sharing my thoughts here:
As a Mellanox former employee, I don't wish to catch too much attention;
sending an email to a public professional mailing list seems a little bit problematic for me ...
I always trying to see where I can give added value;
I found in the internet several reviews on DPDK - what is the benefit of having another one?
Why would one pay for it when he can find it for free?
I think that this will be the case for other popular software projects.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Dotan
I support a few bloggers on Patreon. I like the small donation per post e.g. $2 approach. Thanks!
